PT’s Thoughts: Missional River, August 2016

July 28, 2016 by pastortim

First is in a new phase. Having been here almost a year, I sense a large hunger for new life within the congregation, but an equally large uncertainty of what that needs to be. There is recognition that many things that once worked in ministry are not working any longer. One of the interests as I came was to reach out and live our mission, but that isn’t easy. All of this leads to one question that seems pervasive:

What next?

FLC is not alone. Many congregations are facing the same issues. And this is not an easy question. Learning new patterns is not easy for anyone, let alone a congregation. To engage all of this, we need help. So we are partnering with the synod on an initiative called the Missional River, to learn new behaviors that will give us a greater sense of where First Lutheran fits within God’s mission, and to connect us more deeply in our neighborhood, neighborhood being defined both close by as well as more broadly as the whole community.

This process kicks off in August with a learning seminar to be held here at First on the 23-24th. The topic is “Being a remarkable Church”. I am working with a few interested people and will build a team with some others to help us listen to scripture, to our congregation and our neighbors. We will look for new partnerships and ways to make a difference in the community and explore what our purpose is as a congregation. We still need more people who want to do something new here and be part of renewing our ministry and our community.

If you want to know more about what is involved and how to join in, contact me and I will send you more details and most importantly some questions to ask yourself and pray about as you look for how God is calling you to be part of our work together.
